The Different Types of Migraines

the-different-types-of-migraines

Many people believe that all migraine attacks are the same, which is untrue. Every person who suffers from headache pain has unique symptoms and manifestations.

Migraine is a neurological disorder, and there are several subtypes of migraine. Learn about each type of migraine, both with and without a headache, below.

  • Migraine with Aura (Complicated Migraine)
A quarter of migraine sufferers also have an aura, which is a series of sensory and visual alterations that can range from seeing black dots and zigzags to tingling numbness on one side of the body or an inability to speak coherently.
  • Migraine without Aura (Common Migraine)
The symptoms of migraine without aura are similar to those of various other types of migraine. The key difference is that common migraine lacks the warning phases (prodrome and aura) that other types of migraine have.
  • Retinal or Ocular migraine
It is a type of migraine in which a person has temporary visual loss as well as pain in the eyes and head.
  • Vestibular migraine
It is a condition in which a person has dizziness and vertigo along with other symptoms.
  • Hemiplegic migraine
It is a rare type that causes temporary paralysis on one side of the body.
  • Migraine with brainstem aura
It is another rare migraine caused by Cortical Spreading Depression (CSD). It affects one out of every ten patients who have typical episodic neurovascular diseases with aura.
